Laughing Gas Press Release 6/6/2005

Laughing Gas Among Those Honored at the Sabrina Awards 2005

The Laughing Gas Comedy Improv Theatre Company, South Florida's longest running professional improv troupe, was among those honored at the award show for the Main Street Players, the Sabrina Awards 2005.

Laughing Gas was honored with the Skylar Award for Community Service for their efforts during the 2004 election to educate audiences about the election and get out the vote in their month-long effort of shows entitled "Improv The Vote".

The Laughing Gas Christmas special, "Twas the Night Before...the Night Before...the Night Before Christmas..." was honored with The Main Street Playhouse Award for Best Improv Show of 2004. The award carried with it the recognition of the best improvised show of the year and for the expansion of the art form to new audiences.

Laughing Gas cast member AJ Navarette was honored with 2 nominations and won in the category Best Male Performance in an Ensemble Cast. AJ also won several Golden Spoon Awards in various categories celebrating elements of performance enjoyed by cast and crew behind the scenes.

The award show held on Sunday, June 5th, at the Main Street Playhouse, was an evening filled with laughter and enjoyment as the awards were handed out. Ably hosted by AJ Navarette and Laughing Gas alum Maryann Tatum, all came out of the show as winners.

"We have been welcomed into this community with open arms," said Laughing Gas director Gerald Owens. "Awards aren't what performing is about. The performances themselves are our reward. But it is nice when someone recognizes our efforts and our shows. We are honored to even have been considered."

"We know how much dedication it takes to perform without the recognition that is deserved," said Main Street Players President Elizabeth Anne Garrard. "The Main Street Players is an organization of dedicated individuals that donate their time and effort for the benefit of the arts. Not only do we provide volunteer and professional artists with an outlet for expression, but also expose the community to various art forms and give professional companies a venue to stage productions that might not otherwise see the light of day. Laughing Gas exemplifies what we are all about."

Over the past year, Laughing Gas, South Florida's leader in topical and satirical comedy, has performed shows taking on holidays, the Academy Awards, movie and TV events, and performed benefits for several major charities. Earlier Laughing Gas was selected as the Best Short Form Improv Troupe at the Improv Miami Prizes. All of this has earned Laughing Gas a reputation as a comedic force in South Florida.
